Q: why do the current consumptions of GlobalTop FGPMMOPA6C (PA6C) are sensibly higher than those of GlobalTop Gmm-u2p and GlobalTop SL3C modules?

All the following GlobalTop Technology GPS receivers
  • GlobalTop Gmm-u2p
  • GlobalTop SL3C
  • GlobalTop FGPMMOPA6C (PA6C)

are based on the same MediaTek MT3329 chip. From the following table though

modeGmm-u2pSL3CPA6C
acquisition (mA)191925
tracking (mA)151520

it is clear that the current consumptions of GlobalTop FGPMMOPA6C (PA6C) are sensibly higher than those of GlobalTop Gmm-u2p and GlobalTop SL3C modules. As GlobalTop FGPMMOPA6C (PA6C) has a passive internal GPS patch antenna (patch-on-top), the reason for a higher current consumption is the internal power supply distribution architecture:

  • GlobalTop Gmm-u2p: switching regulator
  • GlobalTop SL3C: switching regulator
  • GlobalTop FGPMMOPA6C (PA6C): linear regulator
