Hello,

We are planning to design our own carrier board for this module and we need Ethernet connectivity but no continuously,  the problem is that we have space issues so we are thinking to place the Ethernet connector off board  on another external PCB as a PMOD style, and connect it every time we need Ethernet.

Do you have any experience doing that with this SOM boards? would it be required to use a particular board-to-board connector or with a normal pins PMOD like should work (as long we match lengths)?

Thanks.

Hello,

would you use ETH Phy from TE0720 module or own ETH PHY on you Module (For example: http://store.digilentinc.com/pmod-nic100-network-interface-controller/) and routed Zynq ETH controller signals over EMIO and PL IOs ?

Hello John,

Thanks for the answer, the idea would be to use ETH Phy from TE0720 module and just place the RJ45 off the board in small PCB, same style as the PMOD but without the Phy driver and use EMIO and PL IOs.

You can use your own connectory type xyz between the SoM and the RJ45 Jack, we know some customers are doing it that way. It is not so recommended and you would have to make sure the connector cabling is suitable as of signal integrity etc. PMoD style pin-header is not a very good option for RJ45 signal connector, best bet it would work, but it is up to you do decide if you use some better connector.

Hi, thanks for the answer and advice, what do you mean with  "connectory type xyz"? solder the Ethernet cable strait to the PCB?
